Overview

This session will start with three speakers who are society members (or potential members) covering a spectrum of needs from the early careerist onwards, including practitioners and researchers.

This will be followed by a fireside chat and conversation: starting with the speakers, and then opening up to the floor.

Discussion groups

At the end of this session, we will break into discussion groups to look at what societies could do more of / better / differently to ensure they stay relevant to their membership - both current and future.

Where is your community? (Global / Local)

What does it mean to be a convener of a community in an environment where we are trying to reduce to global travel footprint?

This session will include a panel of four society leaders who will consider what Global / Local means to the different activities of their societies. Each will present for 10 minutes on what their societies have done / are planning on doing / conundrums they face across the society activities (membership, meetings, education, professional development, publishing).

This will be followed by whole room discussion.

What new and interesting things are happening in conferences and meetings? How does our increasing awareness of our carbon footprint change the way we do meetings? How do we, as conveners and organizers, make sure that when we bring people together we know why we do it, and maximise those things that being physically together brings and think imaginatively about how to convene a community without physical meetings.

In the context of Plan S and increasingly uncertain revenues from traditional publications, how can societies respond to the changes imposed on them? Collaboration and diversification – both internally, and externally provide part of the answer; as to bringing the expertise of publications to new activities and possible revenue sources for the society. Join us to think about how these elements can fit together.
